This FAQ is about the New (Blue) version of RefWorks, released to Quinnipiac in 2020. If you are currently using the Legacy (Orange) version of RefWorks, please consider migrating to the newer, more full-featured version, using these instructions. Information about the Legacy version can be found here.

Data in your RefWorks account is stored on secure servers. Backing up your references is primarily aimed at those users who plan to migrate their accounts to a new institution, a personal account, or a different reference manager.

Part 1: Backup

1. In All References view, select the Share icon, located at the top toolbar. Choose Export References.

2. Consult the system into which you will be uploading the references for the correct format. If you are moving references between RefWorks accounts, choose the RIS format. Click Export.

3. The file will download to your computer, and will be called Export.[whatever filetype you chose].

Part 2: Upload the references

Follow the instructions given by your new institution or reference system to upload the file and restore all your references.
